Law of Success Lesson #5: Imagination

Imagination is like Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities famous opening line “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair,…. ”  When we are reading the beginning we are trying to visualize the scene that he is describing so we may better get a grasp of where the story is going.  We automatically start thinking about the good times and the bad times in our lives.  When the good times flashes cross your mind you smile.  It is very difficult not to smile when you are thinking about good things.  The bad times take us to a place that we don’t like to be on a regular basis.  Our mood goes from a high to a low as we read this line.  Napoleon Hill uses this concept as it ties into initiative and leadership in his book Law of Success.

“You will never have a definite purpose in life, you will never have self-confidence, you will never have initiative and leadership unless you first create these qualities in your imagination and see yourself in possession of them.”  Imagination is the one thing in our lives that we have absolute control.  Think and Grow Rich stated that desire is the first step to riches.  Our thoughts determines our destiny.  When I was growing up in the 1980s I saw transformation in many people.  A drugs called “crack” was the main cause of these transformations.  I saw people that were productive citizen of the World turn into single focus organisms.  The focus became finding a way to get “high” again.

When you are focusing on getting “high” , how would you able to expand your imagination.  When your thoughts are on things that are not good for you, then it is easy to see your destiny.  Your destiny of self destruction is deeply embedded in your psyche.  When you flip it around and focus on something that is great for you, then you destiny of greatness is also written.  The choice is your….

Law of Success Lesson #4: Initiative and Leadership

Filed under: Personal Development,Self Empowerment — Tags: , , , — Shirland Carrington @ 11:57 am

“…Leadership is essential for the attainment of Success, and Initiative is as essential to success as a hub is essential to a wagon wheel.”  Many major accomplishments may be reached in your life, because of these two essential characteristics.  Napoleon Hill looked at these two keys to success separately but tied them together nicely to teach this lesson.  The old sayings that many of us heard as a child were “too many chiefs and  not enough Indians”  or “too many cooks spoil the broth”.  The first saying have a overabundance of leaders, while the latter had no leader in sight.  The obvious answer is that the right amount of leadership is needed in many organizations to achieve their goals.  The saying would have gone a lot differently if some of the chiefs became Indians and a lone cook stepped up as the head chef.  Leadership and initiative would have solved the dilemmas that they faced.  Napoleon Hill tied these two important concepts together in a big bundle for everyone to comprehend.

Initiative and leadership goes hand in hand.  A great philosopher once said that “Initiative is the pass-key that opens the door to opportunity.”   The major opponent to opening this door is procrastination.  Napoleon Hill believed that procrastination and indecision are twins.  Indecision is probably the worse of the these twins.  You must make the decision and follow through with it to the very end. A person with initiative can not be plagued with indecision.  A decision is defined as choosing a path and cutting off all other alternative pathways.  The ugly head of procrastination must be cut off if you are to succeed.  Procrastination may come in the form of spending extra time on Facebook or other Social Medias instead of doing things that will help you achieve success.   The act of getting ready to get ready never solves anything.  ” Remember that your only limitation is the one that you set up in your mind”

The leader will always see beyond the limitation that other people set for them.  The leader with an acorn and a piece of land might see a future totally different than a follower.  A follower might see a mighty Oak Tree while the leader would see a community with a big mighty Oak Tree,  families living around the tree and a Lake with an overabundance of fishes.  The leader with initiative will not listen to naysayers that tell him that the acorn is just a nut.  The leadership that he will have make him keep his eye on his vision no matter what other people say or do.  His or her ability to block out all negatives, even the negative self talk coming from within.  The end result of families living around the Oak Tree is all the motivation that they need.

A Pleasing Personality – Leadership Qualities That Are Critical to Be Successful in Business

Leadership qualities that Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” book discusses to get phenomenal results in life and business. I have discussed unwavering courage, self control, definiteness of decision, definiteness of plans and the habit of doing more than paid for in previous articles. We will discuss a pleasing personality where Napoleon Hill believes that “no slovenly, careless person can become a successful leader”. Napoleon Hill wrote about approximately twenty different factors to describe a pleasing personality. He believed that the main key to this leadership style is do unto others as you would have others do unto you.

The factors of a pleasing personality are listed below:

1. Positive mental attitude
2. Tolerance
3. Alertness
4. Common courtesy
5. A fondness of people
6. Flexibility
7. Tactfulness
8. Personal magnetism
9. A pleasant tone of voice
10. Control of facial expressions
11. Sportsmanship
12. Sincerity
13. Sense of humor
14. Humility of the heart
15. Smiling
16. Enthusiasm
17. Control of temper and emotions
18. Patience
19. Proper dress

You don’t have to make all these factors a part of you leadership style, but any combination of them will make a better leader. There is no perfect leader so you can never be disappointed but a leader continuously tries to improve them self is by far the leader that I will follow. When you are trying to be successful a willingness to learn and adapt to new ideas are very crucial. Your success is based on how much you work on your inner self as opposed to the knowledge that you have.

When you first hear about this concept you automatically think of a leader without a backbone. A leader with this trait actually has an unwavering courage that allows him or her to lead their followers. When you look at the above factors you realized that that is not the case. When your team consist of many different people with different personalities being able to be flexible is required. A successful leader is one who is able to take these personalities and draw the best out of them. A positive mental attitude draws on the fact controlling your mindset is very important in all aspect of running your business. When you have the right mindset you are able to make the correct decisions where appropriate. Common courtesy goes a long way in making a person feel that they are respected by the leader. You tend to get better from people when respect is shown and a genuine sincerity is detected in your interaction with your followers.

Leadership Philosophy That is Critical To Be Successful – The Habit of Doing More Than Paid For

The gems of knowledge that you get from Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” are endless. The previous articles we discussed Napoleon Hill’s leadership’s philosophies of unwavering courage, self control, definiteness of decision and definiteness of plans.  We will discuss of a leader who has a habit doing more than he or she is paid for. This leadership philosophy in correlation with his other ideas gives you different ways to achieving success in life and business. The question of who makes a great leader is an idea that is dependent on the person. Leadership means different things to different people. A person who you respect is a leader in your eyes might be a nuisance to others.

People are more prone to keep following a leader that goes above and beyond the call of duty. The ideal world is prone to perfect execution and flawless execution of all plans. We don’t live in the ideal world so a leader who can roll with punches and succeed no matter the obstacles is truly appreciated.  Successful leaders do whatever it takes to accomplish their goals. When you have goals that are not on track someone has to do extra work. Leaders sometimes take it upon themselves to put the extra time necessary to get back on track.

Michael Jordan was always the first one at practice and the last one to leave. Michael wanted to make sure that he was prepared to win every game. Michael work ethics made many of his team mates improve their game. He did so much more than was required of him that he inspired many others to do the same. Michael Jordan’s commitment to excellence led to many NBA Championships and the respect of millions of people. Some followers believe that it is their job to pick up the slack and don’t like to see the leader do the extra lifting.

A leader has to able to get down in the trenches and do the “dirty” work sometimes. When your subordinates know that you have no problem rolling up your sleeves and getting to work they have no issues doing more than is expected of them. We are not talking about the people who do it to further their own agenda. The followers who truly believe in the ideals of the leader and are committed to helping him or her accomplish these goals are the one deserving of the praise. If the habit of doing more than is expected of you becomes viral, then your business may explode beyond belief. If you start applying this leadership philosophy and the others in the previous article that Napoleon Hill writes about you will see a change in your business in a relatively short time.

Mastery of Detail – Leadership Attributes That Are Critical to Your Success in Business

Mastery of detail may seem very complicated, but it is a key leadership quality that you must develop. Your choice is to either master the detail or let the detail master you.  Napoleon Hill‘s “Think and Grow Rich” write that this as one of the eleven critical attributes in leadership development. For example, if we were 6 miles apart and started walking towards each other, but we were one degree off. We would never end up in the same location because of that slight deviation.  If that slight detail continued to be overlooked, then how far will we truly be apart?

The sooner we adjust our journey the less chance that it would become a major flaw in your plans. The big picture is normally easier to handle overall, but sometimes you must get down to the nitty-gritty of most situations.  If this quality is not part of you, then find the right person to handle that task. A true leader knows his weakness and uses his resources to overcome it.  One minor detail might put a hole in the boat, but a combination of neglected details might sink the Titanic. A businessperson will fail in the long run if he or she always overlooked the minor details.

For example, if you have the following 4 step system in place to increase your business

1. Generate leads using different lead generation  methods

2. Have a discussion with potential business partner
3. Invite potential business partner to get the information needed to make discussion
4. Follow-up for final decision

You will fail in this model if you had no leads to call which is a major detail. You might be a little successful if you only did only 1 to 3 on a consistent basis. The follow-up even though a minor detail could be the difference between being truly successful and unsuccessful. The leader who masters the details in a business transaction will truly have more success, than the one who just wings it.

For instance if your client is a vegan, but you order a meat entree for lunch that little detail might be the difference between keeping or losing that person as your client.  The chances that your business will grow under these circumstances are slim to nil. Napoleon Hill highlighted mastery of detail as one the key leadership qualities.  What other qualities do you look for in your leaders?

Leadership Attributes That Are Critical in Leaders to Be Successful – Keen Sense of Justice.

Napoleon Hill’s” Think and Grow Rich” believed that a leader should possess a keen sense of justice. Any leader with this quality does the right thing even when no one is watching. A true leader follows his own set of codes that dictates his actions in any given situation.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK Jr.) was such a leader in his fight to end racial segregation and racial discrimination.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. accomplished these changes through civil disobedience and non-violent means. He fought for justice and fairness in the face of danger staying true to his beliefs. People followed and respected MLK Jr. based on a number of factors, but his keen sense of justice was the overshadowing factor that made him a strong leader. A fish stinks from the head down, so naturally his followers will imitate.

If you are truly committed to your beliefs system, then you will do what is right always.  It is very difficult to keep this core trait out of every aspect of your life.  It could seep into your business life as well.  Most businesses with a good grasp of right and wrong tend to have a very strong foundation.  A company that recalls a defective product after finding a defect will be respected.  The company that only does the recall after a whistle blower reveals it is viewed by many in a negative light. The goodwill that is generated by doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing can not be measured on a monetary basis.

The desire to make more profit is overshadowed by the desire to do what is right. If your business model is based on lying, cheating and hoodwinking people into coming into your business, then eventually the house of cards will implode. Leaders must true to themselves and respond in a way that ethical and fair and it does not matter whether he or she is under the microscope or not.

Leadership Attributes That Are Critical in Development To Be Successful – Definitive Plans

Napoleon Hill’s “Think and Grow Rich” wrote about 11 leadership attributes that are critical in leadership development to be successful. I have written previous articles on unwavering courage, self-control, a keen sense of justice and definiteness of decision. This article is about definiteness of plans where Napoleon Hill believed that a leader must plan the work and work the plan. He felt that if you do not have practical and definite plans, then you are lost.

The leader who makes decisions purely by guesswork is like a ship without a rudder. Leaders who are constantly flying blind will eventually crash and their followers will stop following them. As a leader you must not fail to plan otherwise you will plan to fail. One method that you may use to set your plans is the S.M.A.R.T method. S.M.A.R.T is an acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-based.

Your plan must be specific meaning you know exactly what you want to achieve, for example a plan of losing forty pounds in two days. If you achieve this feat then it is measurable, because if you achieved it and the scale allows you to count the weight lost. If you are forty pound overweight and you want to lose that weight in two days, your plan must be attainable. The goal of losing 40 pounds in two days is not realistic, so make your plan based on reality. The time-based of two days is definitely not possible, therefore your mind reject the plan even before you embark on it.

When you make a plan that fails, then your followers start to critique and are very critical of your proposed plans. When a number of your plans fail then your ability to lead will be seriously hindered. When a leader makes a plan he has to have unwavering courage, self-control and definiteness of decisions to follow through all the way with his or her plans. These attributes becomes interdependent on each other. These attributes start to overlap once you start talking about more than three or more of them. You do not have to have all of these attributes to succeed, but you must master the majority of them.

You Will Not Succeed Until You Master The Seventh Step to Riches

Napoleon Hill in his famous book “Think and Grow Rich” states that decision is the seventh step to riches. The Latin root for the word decision means to cut off from alternatives. You looked at all the different scenarios, and then you severed the unacceptable ones. The scenario that is left is the one that you pursue. Your decision making process must be very efficient and effective. The opposite of decision is procrastination, ironically procrastination is normally the decision that most people make. Procrastination is a twin to indecision. You must make the decision to be successful in your home based business and commit to it.  If you don’t make decisions, then procrastination will steal your success in your home business.

The ultimate goal is to make the proper decisions in ensuring success in your home based business. If people with opinions change your mind frequently, you will never attract money to your home based business. Your carefully selected mastermind group is the only people that you should receive an “opinion” on your proposal. There are a number of different ways to evaluate a situation, choose one and use it to come to a final decision.  When you reach decisions in a timely manner you, then you become a master over procrastination.  The toughest decisions to make are those that not only impact your life, but also your family.

The people who overcome procrastination will allow the results to make the necessary statement.  A 26.2 mile marathon is not completed until the runner makes the decision to take the first step. The majority of failures may be attributed to a lack of decision.   Inaction is a major cause of failure in the decision making process.  Major corporations that previously use to sweep failures under the rug are now looking at them more closely.  These corporations are trying to learn from these failures to avoid the same thing happening in the future. Most successful people make decisions quickly and are very slow to change them. The unsuccessful person makes decision slowly and changes them rapidly.

The value of your decisions is depended on your courage to make them. The great decisions made by leaders, such as Abraham Lincoln was reached at great risks. Abraham Lincoln made decisions that ultimately led to his death.  The decisions you make not only impact you but affect everyone in your life. The conclusion that you reached after consideration must not be taken lightly. Your telephone feels like a hundred pounds when you pick it up to call your leads. You made the decision to be a success in your home business yet you procrastinate in making those phone calls. When you don’t make those phone calls, then you are allowing procrastination to run your home business. Your success or failure in your home business is dependent on your actions or in actions.

7 Ways to Simply Ask For Help to Improve Your Home Business

There are many advertisements on the internet that states grow your home business on autopilot with a system. These companies seem to be selling a “lazy” way to increase your wealth.  You can grow your home business by using some simple strategies.  You might have a great website, capture page, blog etc. but if you don’t have a call to action.  You must ask your potential business partner to do business with you.  You may ask your potential business partners for their business using seven different methods.

The 7 different ways to ask are listed below:

1. Ask for information.

The best way to find out information is to ask questions, and then listen attentively to the answers.  You must not anticipate what you think the person is going to say and answer as soon as possible.  Listening is a dying art that we must all revive.  The main objective here is to focus on helping the person that you are meeting with and not have dollars signs in your eyes.  The type of questions you asked should begin with who, why, what, where, when and how to acquire the information you need.

2. Ask for business.

There are a vast majority of salespeople who are scared to ask for the order.  The actual number of salespeople is 60% that after doing a complete presentation of their product or service never attempt to “close” the sale.  A kid is the best salesperson that you will ever meet.  When kids want something they will ask you again and again until the end of time to get it.

3. Ask for written endorsements.

Testimonials are one of the best ways to give yourself instant credibility.  These testimonials state that you are a trustworthy person who delivers what you promise.  People always want to feel like the person they are about to enter a partnership with is tried and true.

4. Ask for top-quality referrals

Referrals are automatic testimonial that state that a “friend” have looked at your product or service and they felt that you were worthy enough to give you another “friend” name.  They will look at your product or service more readily, than if you had cold call them.

5. Ask for more business.

You must have different things for sale.  It is always cheaper to keep a client, than it is to go out and acquire a new one.  The Business  Model of people like Tony Robbins is to bring you in at lower level products and then offer you an incremental higher cost seminar on a regular basis.

6. Ask to renegotiate.

When you think you are getting the best deal, you come to realize that it can be better.  For example if you think are paying the best rate on your car insurance for many years does not mean you can’t pick up the phone and ask for a better rate.

7. Ask for feedback.

This is probably the scariest one of them all because people fear criticism.  When you ask for feedback you are trying to find out how you can improve your company.  You may be surprise how many new ideas could come from your clients.

You will improve the revenue of your home business simply by applying the 7 ways above.  People are using the internet to move further away from the selling process but asking is the way that some of the greatest corporations have been built.  No sale is made until someone asks for the order.  If you don’t ask then your potential business partner will continue to do what they have always done.  If you continue to do the same thing you have always done then you will get the same results.

The people who are looking for a get rich quick scheme will continue to do so.  The people who will improve their home business the true and tried ways will continue to strive way ahead of the others.  You may use the above 7 ways to increase your bottom line revenue in your home business.

Mastering With a Mastermind Group Will Help Your Home Business Income Opportunity

A mastermind group is needed  to help you with your home business income opportunity.  Your mastermind group is a sharing of the minds of like minded people.  The main purpose of this group is to support each other professionally, personally and emotionally.  You may also share ideas and information that will help each other in your home  business income opportunity. There are four main actions steps that you need to go through to bring your mastermind group to life.

The 4 Action Steps are listed below:

1:  Select the right people

The importance of the people selected is very essential to the overall success of the mastermind group.  You should limit your group to six people.  The power of 6(yourself+5) is phenomenal and selecting them must not be taken lightly.  You are looking for individuals that are likely to create a synergy and provide positive energy to each discussion.  The negative people who just want to dump negativity are not welcome.

2: Everyone must make a commitment

Your mastermind group is for long term supporter so short timers are not welcomed.  If your meeting is set for once per month then each member must be there on a consistent basis.  You must set up an exit strategy and procedures ahead of time to eject a member who is not working out.

3:  Decide when, where, how often and for how long you want to meet

A good rule of thumb is two to three hours every month.  You should select either a breakfast time frame or one at the end of the business day for meeting time.  You must choose a location that you consistently go to every month.  If is very important that you maximize your time to tackle the issues at hand.  Setting up your rules about turning cell phones and other distractions will help your meeting be more productive.

4:  What will you talk about?

You must elect a chairperson to help keep the conversation going in a positive way.  You should start the meeting off with positive comments about something great that occurs in your life or business since the last meeting.  You must give everyone the chance to talk about what is happening in their personal life and business life.  If a particular member has a crisis or other problem that must be addressed, then reserve time to discuss it.

Your Mastermind Group is not only for helping you keep a positive mindset in your home  business income opportunity, but also in your personal life.  You must not take this group lightly because many successful people have they own power of 6.  Billionaire Warren Buffet donates billions of dollars to Microsoft giant Bill Gates for his charities.  We might from the outside looking in think that is crazy, but who are billionaires going to have in their power of 6.  The rule of thumb is that if you take your 5 closest friends’ income divide total by 5 that your income may be accurate predicted. Your mastermind group will help you make your home  business income opportunity a success, so select the individuals in it very carefully.
